Tips For Making NFL Predictions

By , May 21, 2011

Football is America’s favorite sport. No other sport can come close to the TV viewership. Professional football is viewed more than pro basketball, hockey or baseball. This is really not terribly shocking. Not only do many folks find it fun to watch, they also find it fun to wager on. The bad news is that many people go out and bet on NFL games without any substantial preparation. When this happens, it is more likely that they will lose, possibly a lot. Here we will go over a few tips on making NFL predictions and what to consider before you end up losing all your money.

There is no sure fire way to be right all of the time. It is not possible. Otherwise casino bookmakers would not be in business. But there are some steps you can take to help tilt the odds in your favor.

One mistake that many folks make is to over bet. They spend too much money on exotic or propositions bets. It is wiser to just deal with one game at a time. Maybe just focus on picking the winner of the game or the under/over. Steer away from things like “who will win the coin toss.” This is a crazy bet and believe it or not, a lot of people bet this, particularly for the Super Bowl.

Another mistake is not being impartial. Way too often bettors wager on their favorite teams. Of course we want our teams to win, but that does not mean they will. When it comes to wagering, our favorites need to be treated the same as any other team. Additionally, people often bet against their faves on purpose. The thought process is that even if they lose the bet, at lest their team gets the win. That logic is flawed; don’t fall for it.

Every week the NFL releases each team’s injury report. Keep a watchful eye on this. The last thing you want to do is place a wager too early in the week, only to find out that your team’s starting quarterback was injured in practice and will not be playing that coming Sunday. It is best to hold back your selection as long as you can.

Also pay attention to streaks. Teams that are on winning streaks tend to be confident in the next game. Teams that have been losing go into games lacking confidence.

The bottom line is to gather as much data as you can before putting your money at risk. And this should be done in the context of unemotional objectivity.
