Internet Information Services (IIS 6.0) – formerly called Internet Information Server – is a set of Internet-based services for servers created by Microsoft for use with Microsoft Windows. It is the world’s second most popular web server in terms of overall websites behind the industry leader Apache HTTP Server.

Unlike previous versions of Microsoft’s server operating systems, Internet Information Server (IIS) is not enabled by default; nor is ASP.NET1.1.

It reads the metabase during initialization and provides the name space information to HTTP.sys, along with mappings to the appropriate application pools, also controls when to create, start, stop and recycle worker processes.

Specifies whether dynamic content should be compressed. This is important because dynamic content is by definition always changing, and IIS does not cache compressed versions of dynamic output. hus, if dynamic compression is enabled, each request for dynamic content causes the content to be compressed.

If you deploy your application on Windows Server 2003, ASP.NET pages automatically benefit from the IIS 6.0 kernel cache. The kernel cache is managed by the HTTP.sys kernel-mode device driver. driver handles all HTTP requests.

Debuting with Windows Vista, and included in Windows Server 2008, IIS 7.0 features a modular architecture. Instead of a monolithic server which features all services, IIS 7 has a core web server engine. Modules offering specific functionality can be added to the engine to enable its features.
